André-Piolat (1912-1987)
Né en France en 1912, André Piolat s’établit au Canada avec sa famille en 1920. Ayant mené une vie aventureuse, il voyage et travaille au Québec, en Nouvelle-Écosse, en Saskatchewan, en France, en Angleterre et aux États-Unis avant de s’établir à Vancouver en 1955 où il découvre Maillardville et la communauté canadienne-française de la Colombie-Britannique.
Impliqué dans la communauté francophone, André Piolat fonde en 1968 Le Soleil de Vancouver qui devient Le Soleil de la Colombie en 1974. Grâce à son énergie sans bornes, le journal connaît une croissance et est assez établi pour lui survivre. Devenu pionnier de la cause francophone, il crée la Fondation André-Piolat qui attribue chaque année des bourses aux étudiants de la province afin d’encourager l’utilisation du français. En reconnaissance de ses contributions importantes au rayonnement du français, le Consul de France lui remet en 1987 la Médaille de l’ordre national de mérite.

Born in France in 1912, André Piolat settled in Canada with his family in 1920. He lived many adventures, travelling in Québec, Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan, France, England and the USA, before settling in Vancouver in 1955 where he discovered Maillardville and the French-Canadian community of British Columbia.
André Piolat was much involved in the Francophone community and, in 1968, founded Le Soleil de Vancouver which became Le Soleil de la Colombie in 1974. He devoted boundless energy to the establishment of the paper; he saw it grow and it continued to be published after his passing. As a pioneer of the Francophone cause, he created the Fondation André-Piolat which grants bursaries to students in the province in order to promote the use of the French language. In 1987, he received from the French Consul, the Medal of the Order of Merit in recognition for his important contribution to the promotion of the French language.
